生物周期

雄性很少,成年的雌性是雌雄同体的,并能自我繁殖。 它们在蜕皮后脱离蜡质分泌物,呈椭圆形,腹面扁平,背面凸起。 一段时间后,雌性用蜡覆盖自己,开始形成卵囊(有200-400颗卵)。

在产卵之前,希特拉会分泌蜜汁,在干燥的天气里,蜜汁会凝结成大的、白色的、半不透明的块状物,附着在昆虫身上,完全覆盖住它。

过了这段时间,幼虫开始活跃起来,在植物上快速移动,直到找到它要定居的地方(这个阶段持续1天)。 一旦选择了地方,幼虫就定居下来,开始了持续一个月的生长和进食期,用一层蜡黄色的东西覆盖自己,这就是第一次蜕皮。 在第三次蜕皮结束时,成年雌虫出生,它在这个阶段,雌性有一个粗糙的、红黄色的身体,被大量的蜡质覆盖,保护着卵,看起来像非常细的红沙。 产卵后,雌性死亡。 在葡萄牙,有三个繁殖季节:二月、六月和九月。
